DREDGING AT NEWPORT

Contractors have started dredging the section of the Newport Canal towards the A41. In the photo below Summerhouse Bridge can be seen in the background. The silt is excavated and placed into a barge, which is then moved along the canal. Silt is then transferred into dumpers and deposited in Norbroom Park to dry out. Last week the sections above and below Fishers Lock were dredged and its hoped there will be sufficient funds available for Town Basin to be cleared as well. After that fundraising will continue to dredge the rest of the 1½ miles still in water in Newport.
