SNCT to Support Arts Project for Young People in Shrewsbury

S&N Canals Trust is pleased to be partnering with “The Hive” Arts Centre in Belmont, Shrewsbury, on their “Hidden Waterways” project which has just been awarded a £75,000 Lottery’s Heritage Fund grant. As reported in the Shropshire Star, “the project will use people’s memories and stories, community history and information gathered from archives, digital collections”, etc, and will “aim to encourage community engagement and increase investment and positive attitudes to the canal’s restoration.” Other partners in the scheme will be Art Shack, Virtual Shropshire and Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings.

The two-year project will include workshops, spoken word and poetry sessions, aerial and drone photography, trips, a ceramics trail and sound recordings.

The Hive provides a base for young people in Shropshire to explore and build on their creative skills. They organise funded arts programmes to work with children and young people – some of whom are vulnerable or at risk. They aim to support young people and help them to realise their aspirations and to develop confidence and self-esteem, despite facing challenging circumstances.
